When a child enters foster care, the law says that children should be placed with relatives when they are safe and appropriate.  The relative then can work to become a certified foster parent for that child.

In order to become certified foster parents, Relative Care Providers must pass a homestudy, criminal background check and APS/CPS check (Adult Protective Services/Child Protective Services).  The homestudy process will involve visits to the relative home by a social worker, a home safety check, interviews and paperwork.  They must also complete PRIDE (Parent Resources for Information, Development and Education) training.
