Ways To Help Kids in Foster Care (Other Than Being a Foster Parent!)

We talk to people every day who want to help youth in foster care have better lives but can’t necessarily be foster parents.  Sometimes the timing isn’t right for them to foster or there is another obstacle in their path like not having enough space in their home.  Whatever the case may be, if you are not able to provide foster care, there are still ways you can be a light in the lives of children in foster care.

Here are a few ideas:

Help us reach others. The more people we can reach, the more potential foster parents we can speak with! If you have contacts with media , business owners or service groups, help us connect!

Be an advocate for children in foster care by educating your church congregation about foster care in WV.  Here’s how:

  • Invite someone from our staff to speak to the congregation

  • Put children in care on your prayer list

  • Place information about foster care (that we can mail you) in a visible place in your church

  • Does your church have a youth club or a women’s group? As a project, they could collect hygiene items to donate to a foster care agency in your community

  • Hold a special Bible School class to discuss foster care in your community and related scripture

Organize a Carry – On Campaign drive. Many children in foster care go between homes carrying only a garbage bag. You can help make the transition easier by donating new luggage or duffle bags. Share our literature. We have some great handouts and stickers to share. If there is an information table or space in your workplace lobby, we can mail you literature or you can pick it up at our office.

Host a special fundraising event or help us raise money when we organize fundraising events or campaigns. If you have an idea, please let us know!
